O sons of hopes that seek refuge in his bounty,

die, for the radiant, magnificent one has died.

Bounty has ebbed; glory has died; wisdom has departed.

All creation has perished; the widest expanse has narrowed.

I marvel—and the ways of time are strange—

at the heart of your age: how can it not shatter?

And at the sun of your sky—how has it not been unveiled by anguish?

Rather, how does it rise after Abu al-Fawaris?

And at a sanctuary that enfolded his body, pure and

sacred—how is it not raised to the heights?

Does the earth grow too narrow for you, though it is vast,

yet a few cubits enclose your body after your death?

So may abundant rain, like your bounty, water you

for all time, and a steady rain that never ceases.

For time, after you, is bare of its jewels,

estranged from its people, filled with dread.
