    nor awoken from merriment,

    nor studied a question,

    ولا تعلَّمتُ الجَدَل

    nor sought high rank,

    nor learned disputation,

    سِباعُها مُفتَرِسَه

    nor entered a school

    whose wild beasts are predatory,

    their faces scowling.

    nor piety nor lineage,

can spare a young man the need for gold.

If you do not believe me, then ask.

    Go up to those chambers,

    and look at those crafts,

  18. وابكِ لفَضِلي والشَّرَف

    واحكُم لِغَيرِي بالسَّرَف

and make my abandonment a byword.
