    Gray hair settled on my two temples as a guest.

    Ah, may God give him drink, as guest and neighbor!

    And his arrival clothed me in every trait

    of an old man, except dignity.

    And he made me drink cups of the pain he caused,

    Bitter, crippling—not wine.

    يعشقُ العِشق ويهوى الخَسارا

    I have died—yet my heart is alive;

    It loves love and craves loss.

    It plays at youth, after reluctantly returning

    what it borrowed from youth’s hidden depths.

    What are you doing? For God’s sake, tell me.

    I see no power over you in this.

    ما أطيقُ الخَطوَ إلا قِصارا

    For I am a worn-out beast in a corner of the house;

    I can manage only short steps.
