But barring the way to the bread in his house

are the battles of the Daylamites and the Turks.

His dry loaf lies in his pocket,

as though it were a musk pod.

He regards his guest’s fasting in his house

as devotion—and who would turn away from devotion?

And he counts guarding the morsel as his religion,

and giving it away as a form of polytheism.

He wishes, out of his meanness, that he

had ended up without a molar or a jaw.
