ربَعٌ حرامٌ آمِنٌ جيرانُهُ
I am the abode of your abode; under nobility’s law, it is
My abode is your abode, though it lies
A sacred precinct whose neighbors are safe.
In a sacred, secure neighborhood

فالبحرُ مِلحُ مياههِ عقيانُهُ
Let not my appearance make you disdain my inner character.
Do not disdain my appearance in my chamber
For the sea, the salt of its waters is its pure gold.
For the sea is salty though its waves quench thirst
ليسare not القدودُbodily forms ولاnor البرودُstriped cloaks فضيلةًa virtue
ليس القدودُ ولا البرودُ فضيلةً
ماnot المرءُa man إلاexcept قلبُهُhis heart ولسانُهُand his tongue
ما المرءُ إلا قلبُهُ ولسانُهُ
Neither bodily forms nor striped cloaks are a virtue.
Neither asceticism nor knowledge are virtues
A man is nothing but his heart and his tongue.
A person is only their heart and tongue
