Your grave, O best of sultans, is singled out

By a greeting like the east breeze that has passed through Darin.

A grave holding an imam of guidance from the Banu Nasr,

Exalted in rank in this world and in religion.

Abu al-Walid—and what a king he was!

Seeking victory, trusting in God, worthy of trust.

A sultan of justice, overpowering might, and generosity,

And excellence in piety and blessed character.

By God, what nobility death has enfolded,

And the secret of glory buried in this grave!

And a tongue fluent in remembrance of God,

And a heart inhabited by love of God!

As for jihad, he revived its landmarks,

And fulfilled its obligations and recommended observances.

How many conquests were his! The pulpits glow with

Pride in them, as do the pages of the poetry collections.

A warrior who attained from martyrdom's grace that which

Is heaped upon him as a reward without end.

He died, like Uthman, in the sacred month, at midmorning,

A martyr's death, stabbed within the house.

The dust of campaigning on his cheeks is wiped away

In the Garden of Eternity by the hands of its wide-eyed houris.

There he is given drink from the spring of Tasnim, while his killer

Is driven back and forth between Zaqqum and Ghislin.

The lands and the people weep for him together,

So all creation is amid sorrows of many kinds.

    فأمره الجزم بين الكافِ والنونِ

    Yet it is the Lord's decree, which none can turn back;

For His decisive command lies between the kaf and the nun.

So may the mercy of God, Lord of all worlds, rest upon

A just sultan buried in this grave.
