أوجبتyou made obligatory ليfor me شكراًgratitude وماand not قمتُI fulfilled منof
أوجبت لي شكراً وما قمتُ من
حقَّكyour due بالفرضwith the obligatory duty ولاnor الندبِthe recommended duty
حقَّك بالفرض ولا الندبِ
You have made gratitude incumbent on me, yet I have not fulfilled
You have bound me with gratitude though I have not
either the obligatory or the recommended part of what I owe you.
Fulfilled my duty to You, neither ordained nor supererogatory
ولوand even if بسطتI laid flat الخدthe cheek قصرتI fell short عنof
ولو بسطت الخد قصرت عن
واجبwhat is due ذلكthat السيدlord الندبِthe generous one
واجب ذلك السيد الندبِ
And even if I laid my cheek flat, I would fall short of
Even if I laid down my cheek, I would fall short of
what is due to that generous lord.
