ألاHear! ياO أيهاyou (vocative) المرءُthe man الذيwho رامَsought توبَةًrepentance
ألا يا أيها المرءُ الذي رامَ توبَةً
فصدتهso it turned him away عنهاfrom it النفسthe soul معكوسoverturned آمالِhopes
فصدته عنها النفس معكوس آمالِ
Hear, O man who sought repentance,
O man who desires repentance
but whose soul turned him away from it, his hopes overturned;
But is prevented by his soul, whose hopes are reversed,
وقدand already أيقَنَتit knew for certain علماًknowledge بباطنof the inner nature of أمرهhis condition
وقد أيقَنَت علماً بباطن أمره
بأنَّthat الفَتَىthe young man يَهذِيbabbles وليسand is not بفَعَّالِa man of action
بأنَّ الفَتَى يَهذِي وليس بفَعَّالِ
it already knew for certain his inward condition:
And is assured in his inner knowledge
that the young man babbles and is no man of action.
That the youth is delirious and not effectual,
إلىuntil كمhow long ترجيyou hope for العمرlife والعمرُwhile life ذاهبٌpassing away
إلى كم ترجي العمر والعمرُ ذاهبٌ
بتضييعthrough wasting أوقاتٍperiods of time وتبديدand dispersing أحوالِaffairs
بتضييع أوقاتٍ وتبديد أحوالِ
How long will you pin your hopes on life, while life slips away
How long will you hope for life while life is fleeting
through wasting time and throwing your affairs into disarray?
By wasting time and scattering circumstances?
