He gave me drink—welcome to the pouring and the cupbearer!

Pure wine, through which joy sprang to its feet.

And no accompaniment but marvels of wisdom,

Nor any cup but one of joy and pages.

For it has stirred in me rapture after rapture,

Sustaining me with a spirituality rich in savor.

So its perishable script brings pleasure to my gaze

And my hearing; the soul's share comes from its enduring share.

    فأثوابُهُ قر جُدِّدَت بعد إخلاقِ

    It restored my youth after seventy years;

So its garments were renewed after wearing out.

And never, for a single day, was I a companion to wine,

Nor did I ever accept it as my character took shape.

Nor did it mingle with my flesh or blend with my blood.

My Lord warded off its harm; thanks, then, to the Protector.

And that was in the days of youth—how, then, could I

Have it after the water of youth has been spilled?

How far apart the two wines are—take heed!

For how wide the gulf between an endeavor's success and failure!

For that one is passed around amid wrongdoing and darkness,

While this one is passed around amid light and radiance.

    O undisputed banner of beneficence,

A testimony upheld by consensus and unanimous agreement:

Your beautiful poems have come to me in succession,

With abundant wine from the clouds of your thought.

Treasuries of learning, whose pearls you sent

To me, without withholding them for fear of spending.

And nothing equals a freeborn Arab maiden,

Pure in character, noble in lineage.

So I swear: no fair beauties displaying their charms,

Whispering secretly to you between hints and lowered glances,

Full moons rising from the horizon of their necklaces over

Gardens revealed in a necklace-bearing bough,

    With daisies matching their mouths,

And narcissus matching their eyes' enchantment,

And the rose resembling their rosy cheek—

Watered by fresh youth—blessed be such a cupbearer—

And clothed in finely patterned brocade from Sana'a,

And adorned with precious jewels of pearl,

Are sweeter to mouths or lovelier to eyes,

Or clearer to minds or more desired by lovers.

In them I saw heaven's shooting stars descend

To me, greeting me with the greeting of one who longs.

    فقد سَحَرَت قَلبِي المُعَنَّى فَمَن راقِ

    Behold, this is magic—not the magic of Babylon;

For they have bewitched my tormented heart—who can lift the spell?

The virtues of a noble man have indeed made my thanks inadequate,

Most devoted to loved ones and most faithful to a covenant.

    رويدك لا تعجل عليَّ بإرهاق

    He called in my debts of verse, prompting me;

Take your time; do not hurry to overburden me.

For if the two Ṣāds were raised from their graves

To do this debt justice, they would seek refuge in poverty.

May you never cease to revive the traces of noble deeds,

And may your rank among the eminent and wise keep rising.
