When will he find relief from searing grief and anguish,

so as to ascend the path of salvation and nearness to God?

When will he gather blessings bearing sweet fruit—

one slow to piety, swift to sin,

near the abyss, far from the Lord?

    Enamored of his worldly life, he dwells amid its regrets;

he hopes for life's coolness amid its embers,

and hopes for sound progress from its stumbles.

A stupor grips him; he remains within its depths,

cast down, laid low upon both hands and his side.

Do you incline toward this world and stray from guidance,

while your head wears gray hair as turban and robe?

Hopes have indeed grown long while life's span has shortened.

Gray hair has appeared at both your temples, warning of death:

how long, then, will you persist in folly and self-conceit?
