    Until gray hair came to me, warning me,

    so I replaced the rule of waywardness with right guidance.

    If only I knew—and wishes are illusions—

    whether youth will ever return.

    تكف الدموع بصفحة الخدّ

    It departed, leaving me its memory;

    tears trickle down my cheek.

    There is no love poetry after the first streaks of gray,

    so cast aside the pledges of union and rejection.

    لا تخلطنّ الهزل بالجدّ

    And fold away love verse, for it is folly;

    never mingle jest with earnestness.

    And unfold finely wrought praises of him who

    attained preeminence while still in the cradle:

    a scion of generosity, sound judgment, and

    deep-rooted glory and inexhaustible bounty.
