تبصَّر فحكمُ القهوتين تخالفا

فكم بين إثباتٍ لعقلٍ وإزهاقِ

فكم بين إثباتٍ لعقلٍ وإزهاقِ

Look closely: the two brews differ in their effects.

For how great the gulf between steadying the mind and destroying it!

وشتّان ما بين المدامين فاعتبر

وشتّان ما بين المدامين فاعتبر

فكم بينَ إنجاح لسعي وإنفاقِ

فكم بينَ إنجاح لسعي وإنفاقِ

And how far apart the two wines are—so take heed!

For how great the gulf between making an endeavor succeed and squandering it!

فتلك تهادي بين ظُلمٍ وظلمةٍ

فتلك تهادي بين ظُلمٍ وظلمةٍ

وهذي تهادي بين نورٍ وإشراقِ

وهذي تهادي بين نورٍ وإشراقِ

For that one sways between injustice and darkness,

And this one sways between light and radiance.
