Bring it; give me pure wine, without admixture—

My wine, which is my comfort and my cure.

If a drop of it is poured into the glass vessel,

The glass lets the blazing radiance shine through.

And when the libertine takes a draught of it,

A riddler poses the guarded secret to him as a riddle.

And when the seeker takes a mouthful of it,

A confidant whispers to him of the manifest Truth.

It leads him astray through a trackless wilderness where he finds no way,

Whether traveling there by day or by night.

He thrills with rapture through it, as though

It sang to him in ramal and hazaj rhythms.

A sacred breeze blew upon him,

In the shade of a gate forever closed.

Then, if one day he turns back, with something still left in him,

It carries him steadily along the path.

And when a riotous drunkard's intoxication takes hold of him,

Then let him patiently endure a death like al-Hallaj's.

And the purest draught—whoever tastes it

Has indeed found guidance through it by a lamp's light—

Is to see nothing but Reality alone,

And all are compelled toward it, seeking refuge.
