    فسطت عليَّ وقطّعت أسبابِي

    As for Shu‘ūb, Death, she has encamped in the ravines;

    Then she assailed me and severed my ties.

    It did not suffice her that I had lost my youth—

    And parting from my youth was calamity enough—

    Until her unerring arrows struck me,

    After youth, through the loss of loved ones.

    She stretched her right hand and her left toward me,

    With a severer's bond and a plunderer's onslaught.

    So she uprooted my root and my branch; she destroyed

    My parents, then pursued my descendants.

    By God, that grave—what it holds of

    Excellent intellect and the graces of good manners,

    And generosity, sound judgment, and trustworthiness,

    And chastity and purity of garments,

    And pleasing, honeyed qualities,

    Like honey mingled with water from clouds.

    فَلَنَا به زُلفَى وحُسنُ مآبِ

    Be in the care of Ahmad, the best of creation;

    For through him we have nearness and a goodly return.

    فَلَنَا به زُلفَى وحُسنُ مآبِ

    And may mercy from the Guardian enfold you;

    For through him we have nearness and a goodly return.

    Until I see you honored and enjoying bliss

    In eternal Paradise, among full-breasted maidens of equal age.
