وكمand how many جمادan inanimate thing وعجماًand speechless creatures لهto him نطقاspoke
وكم جماد وعجماً له نطقا
كالضبِّlike the spiny-tailed lizard والدبِّand the bear والحصباءand the pebbles والحجرand the stone
كالضبِّ والدبِّ والحصباء والحجر
And how many inanimate things and speechless creatures spoke to him,
How much lifeless matter has a voice,
Like the spiny-tailed lizard, the bear, the pebbles, and the stone.
Like the hyena, bear, pebbles and stone.
وحنَّةand the plaintive cry الجذعthe trunk منamong أعلامهhis signs وكفىand sufficient is
وحنَّة الجذع من أعلامه وكفى
منas شاهدٍa witness بانشقاقِthrough the splitting of صَفحَةthe face of القَمَرthe moon
من شاهدٍ بانشقاقِ صَفحَة القَمَر
And the trunk’s plaintive cry is among his signs; sufficient
And the moan of a palm tree is enough,
As a witness is the splitting of the moon’s face.
