ومأمومٍand a follower بهِthrough him عُرِفَwas known الإمامُthe imam
ومأمومٍ بهِ عُرِفَ الإمامُ
كماjust as باهتtook pride بصحبتهin his company الكرامُthe noble
كما باهت بصحبته الكرامُ
And a follower through whom the imam was known,
The leader is known by his faithful followers
Just as the noble took pride in his company.
As the generous are known by their company
لهhe has إذwhen يرتويhe drinks his fill طَيشانُrestlessness صادٍof a thirsty one
له إذ يرتوي طَيشانُ صادٍ
ويسكنُand he grows still حينwhen يعروهُovertakes him الأوامُburning thirst
ويسكنُ حين يعروهُ الأوامُ
When he drinks his fill, he has a thirsty man's restlessness,
When he slakes the thirst of the rash youth
And he grows still when burning thirst overtakes him.
And calms them when passions inflame them
ويذريand he scatters حينwhen يستسقيhe seeks water دموعاًtears
ويذري حين يستسقي دموعاً
يرقنthey charm كماjust as يروقُcharms الإبتسامُa smile
يرقن كما يروقُ الإبتسامُ
And when he seeks water, he scatters tears
When he sheds tears entreating rain
That charm, just as a smile charms.
That soothe like a smile’s delight
