برجٌa tower عظيمُgreat الشأنِstature فيamong الأبراجِthe towers
برجٌ عظيمُ الشأنِ في الأبراجِ
قدindeed بَاهَتِboasted الحمراءُthe Alhambra منهfrom it بتاجِwith a crown
قد بَاهَتِ الحمراءُ منه بتاجِ
A tower of great stature among towers;
A tower of great renown among towers
the Alhambra has taken pride in it as a crown.
Which the red planet crowned with its crown
قلهرّةa Calahorra (fortified tower) ظهرتappeared لناto us واستنَبطَتand brought forth
قلهرّة ظهرت لنا واستنَبطَت
قصراًa palace يُضِيءُshines بنورِهwith its light الوهاجِblazing
قصراً يُضِيءُ بنورِه الوهاجِ
A Calahorra appeared before us and brought forth
An auspicious palace appeared to us and deduced
a palace shining with its blazing light.
A palace whose light illuminates the fervent
فيهاwithin it بدائعُmarvels صنعةٍcraftsmanship قدindeed نوظرتwere matched
فيها بدائعُ صنعةٍ قد نوظرت
نسباًin proportions منfrom الأفرادِthe odd numbers والأزواجand the even numbers
نسباً من الأفرادِ والأزواج
Within it are marvels of craftsmanship, matched
In it marvels of artistry were displayed
in proportions of odd and even numbers.
Types of individuals and pairs
وصنائعُand works الزليجِthe zellij tilework فيon حِيطانِهاits walls
وصنائعُ الزليجِ في حِيطانِها
والأرضُand the floor مثلُlike بدائِعmarvels الديباجِbrocade
والأرضُ مثلُ بدائِع الديباجِ
And the works of zellij on its walls,
And works of stained glass in its walls
and the floor, are like marvels of brocade.
And the land is like marvels of brocade
لبستit donned طرازَembroidered adornment الفخرِpride لمّاwhen أنthat بداappeared
لبست طرازَ الفخرِ لمّا أن بدا
فيهاwithin it اسمthe name مولاناour lord أبيAbu (father of) الحجاجal-Hajjaj
فيها اسم مولانا أبي الحجاج
It donned the embroidery of pride when there appeared
It wore the costume of pride when
within it the name of our lord, Abu al-Hajjaj,
In it appeared the name of our lord Abu Al-Hajjaj
ملكُking الجلالةِmajesty والبسالةِand valor والنَّدَىand generosity
ملكُ الجلالةِ والبسالةِ والنَّدَى
غَوثُsuccor الصَّرِيحthe forthright one بهthrough him وغيثُand rain الراجيthe hopeful one
غَوثُ الصَّرِيح به وغيثُ الراجي
king of majesty, valor, and generosity,
The king of majesty, valor, and freshness
succor for the forthright through him, and rain for the hopeful.
Succor of the distressed through him and rain of the hopeful
