تَملأfills الآفاقthe horizons وعداًpromise ووعيداand threat
So it is borne aloft in his right hand,
She stands independent in prosperity,
filling the horizons with promise and threat.
Filling the horizons with promise and threat.
فهيَso it إذمَاwhenever اغتَرَفَتdrew منfrom بَحرِهِhis sea
عَمَّتِcovered الأرضَthe earth تِهاماًlowlands ونُجوداand highlands
For whenever it draws from his sea,
When she draws from its sea,
it covers the earth, lowlands and highlands.
The earth is covered with bounty and generosity.
فِقَرٌpassages إنif وَعَدَتpromised أوor أوعَدَتthreatened
فالنَّدَىthen bounty الفَيَّاضُoverflowing والبأسُand might الشَّدِيداfierce
Passages—if they promise or threaten—
Whether she promises or threatens poverty,
bring overflowing bounty and fierce might.
The pouring rain and fierce might.
فَهيَso it فيin السِّلمِpeace غَمَامٌa cloud صَيّبٌrain-bearing
So in peace it is a rain-bearing cloud,
She is in peace a pouring cloud
spreading far-reaching shade over humankind.
Extending long shade over the land.
وهيand it فيin الحَربِwar حُسامٌa cutting sword مُقضَبٌkeen-edged
قاطعٌsevering مماfrom whatever يعاديهِopposes him الوَرِيداthe jugular vein
And in war it is a keen-edged sword,
And in war an unsheathed sword,
severing the jugular of whatever opposes him.
Cutting the veins of those who oppose her.
