Youth has departed, admirable in itself and in the traces it left.
Youthfulness has departed, leaving my eyes and traces behind,
And gray hair has arrived, weighty in experience and tidings.
While old age has come, bearing great experience and knowledge.

How splendid the youth I once cherished,
Praise be to Allah for the youth I was intimate with,
More refreshing to my liver than the predawn breeze.
That moistened my heart like the breeze at dawn.

In it I went against the ways of everyone,
In it I reflected on people’s affairs, all of them,
So in it I fulfilled no desire for amusement.
Yet I did not indulge in frivolity or whim.

Nor did I yearn for a cup or a young gazelle,
Nor did I incline towards a cup or drinking,
Nor did I lend an ear to flute or string.
Nor delight in a flute or strings.

I passed the day shunning all given to insolent mirth,
I remained aloof from all wickedness,
And spent the night apart from all with finely serrated teeth.
And isolated myself from all evil.

Until, when the first sign of my graying appeared,
Until my gray hair appeared openly,
And came to me warning that my journey was near.
And came to warn me of my impending journey.

Humble of heart, broken by fear of God,
A heart's humility in awe of Allah, downtrodden,
He is mindful of God in coming and going.
That observes Allah in intimacy and in the breast.
