You left not even a speck of Ankara,

and swept away great Amorium.

The great city lies in ruins.

إن يشك توفيلُ بتاريخه

فحقَّ أن يعذر بالشكوى

فحقَّ أن يعذر بالشكوى

If Theophilos complains in his chronicle,

If Tawfiq doubts the time has passed,

then he is rightly excused for his complaint.

His doubts are surely understood.

تفنى بنو العيص وايامهم

The sons of al-ʿĪṣ and their days perish,

The sons of Eys perish in time

but the memory of your days does not perish.

Yet memory of your days lives on.

يا رب قد أملكت من بابك

يا رب قد أملكت من بابك

فاجعل لتوفيلهم العقبى

فاجعل لتوفيلهم العقبى

O Lord, You have indeed granted mastery over Babak;

My Lord, I come to beg at your gate -

so let their Theophilos meet that same end.
