ليتwould that عينthe eye الدهرtime عناof us غفلتwas heedless
ورقيبand the watchman الليلthe night عناof us رقداslept
Would that Time's eye were heedless of us,
I wish the eyes of fate upon us were unaware
And the night's watchman slept, unmindful of us,
And the night watcher over us was asleep
وأقامand remained النومsleep فيin مدتهits duration
كالذيlike that which كانwas وكناand we were أبدforever
And sleep remained throughout its span,
And sleep stayed in its abode
As it and we once were, forever.
As it was and we were forever
ابأبيmay my father be his ransom زورٌa visitor تلفتI turned لهtoward him
فتنفستso I breathed out عليهfor him الصعداa deep sigh
May my father be ransom for a visitor toward whom I turned;
With my father a lie it turns
So I heaved a deep sigh for him.
So I breathed the mountain air upon it
بينماwhile أضحكI laugh مسروراًdelighted بهin him
إذwhen suddenly تقطعتI was torn apart عليهfor him كَمَداwith grief
While I was laughing, delighted in him,
While I laugh delighted with him
Suddenly I was torn apart with grief for him.
When a sleeve is cut upon it
