ياO مَنyou who شَغلتُI occupied بهجرهwith his estrangement ووصالهand with his union
يا مَن شَغلتُ بهجره ووصاله
هِمَمَaspirations المُنَىthe hopes ونسيتand I forgot يومday مَعاديmy return
هِمَمَ المُنَى ونسيت يوم مَعادي
O you, with whose estrangement and union I have occupied
O you who preoccupy me with your estrangement and union
My hopes and aspirations, and forgotten the day of my return.
My thoughts are distracted from the appointed day of my death
واللَهand by God ماnot التقتmet الجفونُthe eyelids بِطرفةٍin a blink
واللَه ما التقت الجفونُ بِطرفةٍ
إلاexcept وذكركand your remembrance خاطِرٌpassing بفؤاديin my heart
إلا وذكرك خاطِرٌ بفؤادي
By God, my eyelids have never met in a blink
By God, my eyes have not fallen upon a glance
Without your remembrance passing through my heart.
Except that the memory of you crosses my heart
