O tavern on the riverbank, you have honored our stay.
O tavern of the riverbank, you have honored our gatherings,
Return with a day of joy like the one that was.
Return to us a day of joy like the one that has passed.

Do not deprive us of the Imam's jests, nor
Do not deprive us of Imam's jokes, nor
the sweetness of idleness, in secret and in public,
The goodness of leisure, secretly and openly.
ولاnor تخالعناour uninhibited revelry فيin غيرwhat is not فاحشةٍindecency

nor our uninhibited revelry, free from indecency,
Do not make us change except for abomination,
when the tanbur sometimes enraptures us.
When the tambourine brings us joy sometimes.

شجواًsorrowful yearning فأهدىand so offered لناto us روحاrepose وريحاناand fragrant basil
And amid all this, Zunnām's piping stirred in us
The humming throng of singers sang among us
a sorrowful yearning, then gave us repose and fragrant basil.
A plaintive song, and brought us spirit and basil.

And Amr poured the wine-measure smoothly, then shared
Amr chained the anklet, then continued
the drink with all, joining our first to our last.
Adding our first ones to our last ones.

May rain bless your form—a form granted to you alone,
Quenching your image with an image you have specialized
rather than to the country estates, among our world's delights.
Apart from the masters, of our worldly pleasures.

فيat كلِّevery مخترقٍpassage نهراًa river وبستاناand an orchard
Neighboring gardens encircled your meadows,
Your gardens are surrounded by neighboring orchards
at every passage, a river and an orchard.
Through every corridor, a river and an orchard.

May your precincts ever remain inhabited and flourishing,
You are still the populated home of homelands
with the noblest of people in roots and branches.
With the most generous people, roots and branches.
