O monastery of Nasr, you have indeed stirred a dormant passion,
O Umar Nasr, you have stirred the dormant one,
rousing a lovesick man's anguish after a lull.
After lethargy, the confused tongues were aroused,
للّهhow wondrous! هاتفةٌa female chanter هبَّتrose مرجعةًintoning melodiously
زبورَthe Psalms داودَDavid طوراًa time بعدafter أطوارtimes
How wondrous the singer who rose, intoning
Crying out to God, returning in fervor,
David's Psalms, time after time.
David's Psalms anew in cycles,

A cloaked man, well versed in holy rites, urges her on,
Urged by the Bishop of Jerusalem, skilled,
one of the bishops, with a psalm played on a flute.
With hymns and a zither among the bishops,

Its bishops raised their voices in its altar-chamber,
Her bishops were roused in the house of their altar,
and its monks cried aloud in the courtyard of the house.
And her monks in the courtyard of the monastery,

The wine-seller of its tavern, if you visit his tavern,
The tavern's wine, if you visit its tavern,
kindles its incense-braziers with aloeswood and laurel.
Revived its drinkers with lute and jar,

He sways like a bough in black-dyed robes,
It sways like a branch in jet black tresses,
as though their worn fabric were a mass of pitch.
As if its picker is a body of tar,

His mouth's moisture distracts you from the savor of his wine.
Its spittle distracts you from the wine’s fragrance,
Blessings on that fruit from a wine-seller's saliva!
Quenching the thirst of the drinker of that bartender’s saliva,

The glances of a languid eye have drawn hearts to him—
Enticing hearts with it are glances of a saucy gazelle,
bare of kohl, blinking from beneath a sorcerer's lids.
Bashfully glancing from the eyes of a sorceress.
