Khuzayma has bestowed a favor upon us all,

through which the Most Merciful quenched the fury of war.

He took charge of the Muslims' affairs himself,

so he defended and protected them with the noblest defense.

And without Abu al-Abbas, our age would have gone on

passing its nights in hardship and greeting its mornings in hardship.

For Khuzayma, a deed like this was no strange thing,

when the land's east was in turmoil along with the west.

Broad-headed arrows and spears encamped at the Tigris's two bridges,

lamenting one calamity and laughing at another.

So it was like a fire visited at dawn by a cloud,

which then quenched the tangled blaze with flame.

And what is the killing of one soul among many souls,

when the world has come to peace and plenty?

Abu al-Abbas's valiant service is not met with ingratitude,

when enduring distress turns to distress for refuge.

Behold, life is nothing but union with a beloved,

and your taking a share of wine cooled by the north wind,

and your living among singing women, regaled

by two arts—instrumental music and song that strikes true.

And I have seen nothing in this world like a lover's seclusion,

    and a beloved's yielding, and a watcher's sleep,

and my counting the hours of the day, and my watchful gaze

toward the sun as it announced its setting.
