أميرُCommander المؤمنينof the Faithful عنfrom الصيامِfasting
أميرُ المؤمنين عن الصيامِ
I roused you for the morning draught, and we had been forbidden
I shook you awake at dawn, though
by the Commander of the Faithful to fast.
The Commander of the Faithful forbade fasting
وعنديand with me منof قيانِsinging slave girls القَصرِof the palace عَشرٌten

تَطيبُ بهنّ عاتقةُ المُدامِ
And with me are ten of the palace’s singing slave girls;
And I have ten beautiful singing girls
in their company, the aged wine grows sweeter.
Whose shoulders perfume the wine glasses

تراناyou see us نجتنيwe pluck ثَمَرfruit الغَرامِof passion
ترانا نجتني ثَمَر الغَرامِ
And from others like them, when we grow tipsy,
The likes of them, when we frolic,
you see us plucking the fruit of passion.
Pick for us the fruits of passion

أحبَّdearer إليَّto me منthan حذفِdispensing with الكلامِspeech
أحبَّ إليَّ من حذفِ الكلامِ
So be the answer yourself, for nothing is
So be silent, for nothing
dearer to me than dispensing with words.
Pleases me more than leaving words unsaid
