إني اتيتك شافعاً
بوليthrough the heir عهدto the succession المسلميناof the Muslims
بولي عهد المسلمينا
I have come to you as an intercessor,
I come to you as an intercessor
through the Muslims’ heir apparent.
For the heir of the Muslims
وشبيهكand your likeness المعتزal-Muʿtazz أوجهthe most esteemed
وشبيهك المعتز أوجه
شافعٍintercessor فيin العالميناall the world
شافعٍ في العالمينا
And your likeness, al-Muʿtazz, is the most esteemed
And your lookalike, al-Mu'tazz, the best
intercessor in all the world.
Of intercessors among mankind
ياO بنson of الخلائفthe caliphs الأولينthe earlier ones
يا بن الخلائف الأولين
وياand O أباfather of المتأخريناthose to come
ويا أبا المتأخرينا
O son of the caliphs of old,
O son of the first caliphs
and O father of those to come,
And o father of our latter ones
انindeed ابنthe son of عبدكyour servant ماتhas died والأيامand the days
ان ابن عبدك مات والأيام
تخترمcarry off in death القريناthe companion
تخترم القرينا
Indeed, your servant’s son has died, and the days
The son of your servant has died and the days
carry off one’s companion.
Have worn out his peers
ومضىand he departed وخلفand left behind صبيةًyoung children
ومضى وخلف صبيةً
بعراصهِin his courtyards متلدديناlooking about bewildered
بعراصهِ متلددينا
And he departed, leaving children
And he left behind young children
in his courtyards, looking about bewildered,
Clinging to his burial shrouds
ومهيرةand a dowered wife عبرىtearful خلاfirst part of 'besides'
ومهيرة عبرى خلا
فcompletion of 'besides' أقاربٍrelatives مستعبريناshedding tears
ف أقاربٍ مستعبرينا
and a dowered wife in tears, besides
And a weeping woman abandoned
relatives shedding tears.
Among relatives in tears
أصبحنthey have come to be فيamid ريبvicissitudes الحواfirst part of 'the misfortunes'
أصبحن في ريب الحوا
دثcompletion of 'misfortunes' يحسنونthey hold favorable بكof you الظنوناexpectations
دث يحسنون بك الظنونا
They now, amid the vicissitudes of fortune,
They woke to the doubt of events
place their hopes in you.
And think good of you
قطعcut off الولاةُthe governors جرايةًan allowance
قطع الولاةُ جرايةً
كانواthey had been بهاon it مستمسكيناdepending
كانوا بها مستمسكينا
The governors cut off an allowance
The governors cut stipends
on which they had depended.
They had clung to
فامننso grant a favor بردby restoring جميعall ماthat which
فامنن برد جميع ما
قطعوهthey cut it off غيرwithout مراقبيناshowing regard
قطعوه غير مراقبينا
So grant the favor of restoring all
So favor with restoring all
that they cut off, showing no regard.
That they cut without supervision
أعطاكmay he give you أفضلthe best of ماwhat تؤملُyou hope for
أعطاك أفضل ما تؤملُ
أفضلthe best of المتفضليناthe benefactors
أفضل المتفضلينا
May you receive the best of what you hope for
May He grant you the best of what you hope for
from the best of benefactors.
