Did he not confide in you with a sincere gaze,
Though I advised you sincerely
And groan to you from a wounded heart?
That my heart was sincere to you
فليتكَso, if only you حينwhen تهجرُهُyou forsake him ضِراراًto cause harm
تَمُنَّyou would grant عليهto him بالقَتلِwith death المُريحِbringing relief
If only, when you forsake him to cause him pain,
If you abandon him out of harm
You would grant him a death that brings relief.
Grant him a quick, merciful death
بحُسنكbecause of your beauty كانwas أوَّلُthe beginning of حُسنِthe goodness of ظنَّيmy opinion
أماdoes ... not? ينهاكrestrain you حُسنُكyour beauty عنfrom قبيحِugly conduct
Your beauty first inspired my good opinion;
With your beauty my hopes rose high
Does your beauty not restrain you from ugly deeds?
Should not your beauty prevent ugliness?

And you never cease to mistrust my counsel;
Yet you accuse my loyalty still
My soul be ransom for the soul of one who mistrusts his sincere adviser!
Like one who suspects the loyal's counsel

And its lofty pavilion, built of stone slabs.

And their bushes murmuring to me
Reaching me with the scent of buttercups and wormwood.
With the wind's whisper and roar

Pure wine fell in love with a pure-born man;
A fair one intoxicated, intoxicating
And does pure wine disgrace a pure-born man?
Can the sincere reproach the sincere?

So he rose, despite his drooping eyes,
He stood despite his dozing eyelids
And let it stream like a slaughtered beast's neck-veins.
His chains like the victim's bonds

And followed a past bout of drunkenness with another,
And followed one drunkenness with another
And left sobriety to the tightfisted miser.
Leaving the sober for the miserly
