سِر على اسمِ الله يا أش
كَلَend of 'more graceful' منthan غُصنِa bough of لجينِsilver
كَلَ من غُصنِ لجينِ
Go in God's name, O one more
Go forth in God's name, O ash tree
graceful than a silver bough,
Of every branch of Lojain
فيwith ثلاثٍthree منof بنيsons of الروstart of 'the Romans'
في ثلاثٍ من بني الرو
مend of 'the Romans' الىto دارthe house of الحُسينِal-Husayn
م الى دار الحُسينِ
with three of the Ro-
In three days from Bani Al-Rouh
mans, to al-Husayn's house.
To the abode of Al-Hussein
فاشخصِthen send الكهلَthe old man الىto موstart of 'your master'
فاشخصِ الكهلَ الى مو
لاكend of 'your master' ياO قُرَّةَdelight of عينيmy eyes
لاك يا قُرَّةَ عيني
Then send the old man to your mas-
Take the old man to his
ter, O delight of my eyes.
Solace, O joy of my eye
أرِهِshow him العُنفَharshness اذاif استعstart of 'he resists'
أرِهِ العُنفَ اذا استع
صىend of 'he resists' وطالبهُand press him بدينِfor a debt
صى وطالبهُ بدينِ
Show him harshness if he re-
Show him violence when he is
sists, and press him for payment of a debt.
Defiant and demand his debt
ودعِand leave aside اللفظَspeech وخاطبand address
ودعِ اللفظَ وخاطب
هُhim بغَمزِwith a twitch of الحاجبينthe two eyebrows
هُ بغَمزِ الحاجبين
Leave speech aside and address
Leave words and address
him with a twitch of both eyebrows.
Him with raised eyebrows
واحذرand beware الرجعةreturning منfrom وجهكyour errand
واحذر الرجعة من وجهك
فيin خُفَّيthe two slippers of حنينِHunayn
في خُفَّي حنينِ
And beware of returning from your errand
And beware of turning your face
in Hunayn's two slippers—empty-handed.
