Are you hastening the journey at full speed,
Do you hasten the journey as sustenance
away from both sides of Baghdad—or what?
Past the environs of Baghdad, or what?

Do you not see that strife has gathered
Do you not see that sedition has become accustomed
outcasts to the fomenters of strife?
To the seditious as intimate friends?

And Baghdad's buildings have crumbled,
And Baghdad collapsed, its civilization
on the counsel of neither that one nor this one.
Against an opinion, neither this nor that,

هدماً وحرقاً قد أبادَ اهلها

Through demolition and burning, its people were annihilated
Destroying and burning, it destroyed its people,
by a punishment that sought refuge with whoever sought refuge.
A punishment against those who sought refuge.

How harsh the circumstances, unless once more
How harsh are these situations, if they do not return
Baghdad, though diminished, becomes Baghdad!
Baghdad to being Baghdad even in scarcity.
