    ففضضتهن وقد غنين صحاحا

    And aged wines I touched amid gardens;

Then I broke their maiden seals, after they had long remained intact.

I followed a prick in that one with a prick in this,

Until I drank their blood as they lay wounded.

I brought them unveiled out of their secluded chambers,

And left their guarded sanctuaries open to all.

In the monastery of Sabir, while dawn gleamed before me,

I brought together a full moon, the dawn, and wine.

And a pampered youth—I tugged at the loose end of his sash,

And clothed him with my forearm for a sash.

He left the jealous man biting the skin of his wrist,

And leaned his lovely form upon me.

So I did what a yearning lover does on a night

Whose delight returned to me in the morning.

So let your fancy roam as you wish; all of it

Is among what I committed, for pleasure and in wild abandon.
