ألا ليت شعري أبدرٌ بدا
نهاراًby day أمor الملكthe king المنتصرal-Muntasir
نهاراً أم الملك المنتصر
Ah, if only I knew—is it a full moon that has appeared
Alas how I wish my traveling companion,
by day, or King al-Muntasir?
setting out at daybreak or after victory,
إمامٌan imam تضمنenfold أثوابهhis robes
إمامٌ تضمن أثوابه
علىupon سرجهhis saddle قمراًa moon منof بشرhumankind
على سرجه قمراً من بشر
An imam whose robes enfold,
were a leader whose robes concealed
upon his saddle, a moon in human form.
a moon of mankind upon his saddle,
حمىmay protect اللَهGod دولةَthe realm سلطانهof his sovereignty
حمى اللَه دولةَ سلطانه
بجندِwith the host of القضاءِdivine decree وجندand the host of القدرdestiny
بجندِ القضاءِ وجند القدر
May God protect the realm of his sovereignty
may God protect the realm of his sultanate
with the host of divine decree and the host of destiny.
with soldiers of destiny and decree,
فلاso may he not زالcease ماas long as بقيتremains مدةٌa span of time
فلا زال ما بقيت مدةٌ
يروحُjourneys at evening بهاin it الدهرTime أوor يبتكرsets out early
يروحُ بها الدهر أو يبتكر
So may he endure as long as any span remains
so it may last as long as time endures
in which Time journeys at evening or at dawn.
or minting brings forth something new.
