أثبت المعصومُ عزاً لأبي

حسنٍ أثبت من ركن إضم

حسنٍ أثبت من ركن إضم

The divinely protected one secured glory for Abū

The righteous one proved glory for my father Abu Hasan

Ḥasan, firmer than the buttress of Iḍam.

He proved stronger than a firm pillar

كل مجدٍ دون ما أثلهُ

كل مجدٍ دون ما أثلهُ

لبني كاوس أملاك العجَم

لبني كاوس أملاك العجَم

Every glory falls short of what he established

All glory is inferior to what he attained

For the sons of Kāwūs, kings of the Persians.

For the sons of Kaus, kings of non-Arabs

إنما الأفشين سيفٌ سله

إنما الأفشين سيفٌ سله

قدرُ اللَه بكفِّ المُعتصم

قدرُ اللَه بكفِّ المُعتصم

Al-Afshīn is but a sword drawn

Verily Al-Afshin is a sword unsheathed

By God's decree in al-Muʿtaṣim's hand.

By the decree of God in the grip of al-Mu'tasim

لم يدَع بالبَذِّ من ساكنه

لم يدَع بالبَذِّ من ساكنه

غيرَ أمثالٍ كأمثالِ إرَم

غيرَ أمثالٍ كأمثالِ إرَم

He left none of al-Badhdh's inhabitants

He left none in his abode except

Except cautionary examples like those of Iram.

The likes of Iram - traces of the past

ثم أهدى سلماً بابكه

ثم أهدى سلماً بابكه

رهن حجلين نجياً للندم

رهن حجلين نجياً للندم

Then he presented his Bābak as a captive,

Then he gifted peace offering your gates

Bound by two ankle-fetters, a confidant of remorse.

As two hostages sought to make amends

وقرا تُوفيلَ طعناً صادقاً

وقرا تُوفيلَ طعناً صادقاً

فض جميعه جميعاً وهزَم

فض جميعه جميعاً وهزَم

And he regaled Theophilus with unerring thrusts,

And he pierced Theophilus with a true stab

Scattered his entire host and routed it utterly.

Scattering all - defeating and humiliating

قتل الأكثر منهم ونجا

قتل الأكثر منهم ونجا

من نجا لحماً على ظهر وضم

من نجا لحماً على ظهر وضم

He killed most of them, and some escaped—

He killed most of them, some survived

Those who escaped were mere meat atop a butcher's board.

Flesh upon flesh piled high
