أأن دَبَّ حُسَّادٌ ومل حبيبُ

أأن دَبَّ حُسَّادٌ ومل حبيبُ

وأورق عودُ الهجر أنت جنيبُ

وأورق عودُ الهجر أنت جنيبُ

Is it because envious people have crept in and a beloved has grown weary,

Has the slanderer's envy stilled and no beloved remains?

and estrangement's bough has put forth leaves, that you are led along?

The bough of separation has leafed out while you are my solace.

ليبلُغ بنا هجرُ الحبيب مَرامَهُ

ليبلُغ بنا هجرُ الحبيب مَرامَهُ

هلِ الحبُّ الا عبرةٌ ونحيبُ

هلِ الحبُّ الا عبرةٌ ونحيبُ

Let the beloved's abandonment achieve its aim with us;

May the beloved's estrangement achieve what it desires,

is love anything but tears and sobbing?

For is not all love but flowing tears and lament?

كأنك لم تسمع بفُرقة ألفةٍ

كأنك لم تسمع بفُرقة ألفةٍ

وغيبةِ وصلٍ لا تراه يؤوبُ

وغيبةِ وصلٍ لا تراه يؤوبُ

As though you had never heard of companionship sundered,

As if you've not heard of bonds of affection split,

and of a union gone that you never see return.

And of the absence of a union that will not return.

كأني اذا فارقت شخصك ساعةً

كأني اذا فارقت شخصك ساعةً

لفقدك بين العالمين غريبُ

لفقدك بين العالمين غريبُ

It is as though, when I leave your presence for an hour,

As if, when I lose you but an hour,

I am, for lack of you, a stranger among all people.

I've lost you among all existence, O stranger!

وقد رُمتُ أسباب السلُو فخانني

وقد رُمتُ أسباب السلُو فخانني

ضميرٌ عليه من هواك رقيبُ

ضميرٌ عليه من هواك رقيبُ

And I have sought the means of forgetting, but I was betrayed

And though I've grasped at means of soothing, they've betrayed me-

by an inner heart over which a sentinel of love for you stands watch.

A conscience over which your love keeps watch.

فمالي الى ما تشتهين مُسارعٌ

فمالي الى ما تشتهين مُسارعٌ

وفعلُكِ مما لا أُحبُّ قريبُ

وفعلُكِ مما لا أُحبُّ قريبُ

So my wealth hastens toward whatever you desire,

So why am I rushing to do what you desire

while your conduct comes close to what I dislike.

When your deeds are of that which I do not love?

أغرَّك صفحي عن ذنوبٍ كثيرة

أغرَّك صفحي عن ذنوبٍ كثيرة

وغضَّي على أشياءَ منك تُريبُ

وغضَّي على أشياءَ منك تُريبُ

Has my forgiveness of many offenses misled you,

Has my pardoning your many sins made you vain

and my turning a blind eye to things from you that stir suspicion?

And my overlooking certain of your acts that gave me pause?

كأن لم يكن في الناس قبلي متيّمٌ

كأن لم يكن في الناس قبلي متيّمٌ

ولم يكُ في الدنيا سواك حبيبُ

ولم يكُ في الدنيا سواك حبيبُ

As though no one among humankind before me had been love-stricken,

As if, before me, none have ever been infatuated,

and there had been no beloved in the world but you.

And in all the world, none but you has been beloved!

الى اللَه أشكو إذ ذكرت فلم يكن

الى اللَه أشكو إذ ذكرت فلم يكن

لشكواي من عطف الحبيب نصيبُ

لشكواي من عطف الحبيب نصيبُ

To God I complain when I remember, for there has been

To God I complain, remembering, but there is

no share of the beloved's tenderness for my complaint.

No share of love's kindness that is my lot from the beloved.
