معاذ اللَه والأيدي الجِسامِ
Shall I console myself for your loss, O Muhammad?
I console myself, O Muhammad, for you
God forbid—and by those great benefactions!
Never! By God and the mighty hands!

ودوفِعَ عنك لي يومُ الحمامِ
Why, then, did some who still live not die,
Why didn’t a people die who didn’t die?
and why was death's day not warded off from you for my sake?
And warded off from you for me on the day of ordeal

As though death had found in you a prize,
As if death had found spoils in you
or sought a cure for sickness by drawing near you.
Or been cured by your nearness of sickness
