My two brothers, come to the morning draught at dawn.

Rise, both of you; do not take morning for evening.

    This streaked dawn seems bewildered,

At the horizon, its path was barred, so it shone forth.

What do you two advise concerning a village wine

That joins success to the attainment of success?

So long as a companion remains over the morning draught

And the evening draught, I shall have no wish to leave.

Would you two excuse a companion at Sarjis's monastery

For being sober, or would you consider that a sin?

I seek to shield you both, by the affection between us,

From drinking plain water in the villages of the Euphrates.

Our goblets rang out, and our priest chanted holy praises,

In lilting song; the fowl raised a clamor around us with their cries.

The dawn draught has its merit, so hasten, both of you,

If you two deem that good.

Ah, many a man whose eyelids were wrapped in slumber

I roused with wine when he lay at rest.

It was as though the cup's fragrance, when I summoned him

To the cup, had raised a wing within his breast.

So he responded, stumbling over his cloak's trailing folds,

In haste, mingling merriment with stumbling.

He kept laughing at me and making me laugh at him,

Never sobering, all playfulness and banter.

So I tore the veil from his wantonness with my own shamelessness

In every diversion; I spoke openly, and so did he.
