وباقلاءand broad beans باقلleafy
وباقلاء باقل
يعجبdelights حسناًin beauty منwhoever رمقgazes
يعجب حسناً من رمق
And a leafy broad-bean plant
Like peas in their pods,
delights every beholder with its beauty.
His beauty delights the eye,
كأنماas though نوارهits blossoms
كأنما نواره
اذwhen راقwas pleasing خلقاin form وخلقand in nature
اذ راق خلقا وخلق
Its blossoms seem,
As if his radiance
as they charm in form and nature,
Were of the finest make and form.
اذقانchins بيضwhite غلّفتwere anointed with perfume
اذقان بيض غلّفت
لمبصرfor a beholder ومنتشقand one inhaling the scent
لمبصر ومنتشق
like white chins anointed with perfume,
Like the whites of eggs enfolded,
to the beholder and the one who inhales their scent.
A joy to behold and savor,
أوor أعينeyes حورhouris: dark-eyed beauties جرتflowed
أو أعين حور جرت
الىtoward مآقيهاtheir inner eye-corners الحدقthe pupils
الى مآقيها الحدق
Or houris' eyes, their pupils drifting
Or the eyes of houri maidens
toward their inner corners,
Cast down in modest gaze.
وهدبهاand their lashes مستبطنhidden inside
وهدبها مستبطن
فيwithin ورقpetals منof الورقsilver
في ورق من الورق
their lashes hidden
Like the tender leaves
within petals of silver.
Nestled in verdant growth,
اوor جنحdarkness ليلnight بقيتremained
او جنح ليل بقيت
منهof it بقاياremnants فيin فلقdaybreak
منه بقايا في فلق
Or night's darkness, from which linger
Or wings of night that linger
remnants amid the breaking dawn.
At first light with remnants of dark.
اوor سبجjet فيamong دررpearls
او سبج في درر
اوor ثننfetlock tufts بهاon them بلقblack-and-white mottling
او ثنن بها بلق
Or jet among pearls,
Like pearls in necklace strings,
or fetlock tufts mottled black and white.
Or folds in damask cloth,
كأنas though للمسكfor musk بهاupon them
كأن للمسك بها
مشقاa tracing بنياتlittle offshoots طرقroads
مشقا بنيات طرق
As though musk had upon them
As if musk had etched his skin
a tracing of little branching paths;
With well-traced paths.
وعرفهand its fragrance معرفrevealing
وعرفه معرف
بانهthat it فيهwithin it فتقwas unsealed
بانه فيه فتق
and its fragrance reveals
His scent itself reveals
that musk was unsealed within it.
The purity within.
كانas though جلrose عامرʿĀmir
كان جل عامر
منfrom خلقهhis character طيباas perfume خلقwas fashioned
من خلقه طيبا خلق
As though ʿĀmir's rose
Noble in his creation,
were fashioned as perfume from his character—
If he is kind, he pardons;
ملكa king اذاwhen صالstrikes عفاpardons
ملك اذا صال عفا
حلماout of forbearance وانand if سيلis asked اندفقgushes forth
حلما وان سيل اندفق
a king who pardons when he strikes,
If wrath comes like a flood,
out of forbearance, and when asked, pours forth his bounty.
He holds back with gentle calm.
انif بخلwithholds الغيثthe rain سخاgives generously
ان بخل الغيث سخا
اوor عنفis harsh الدهرtime رفقis gentle
او عنف الدهر رفق
If rain withholds, he gives freely;
Though rain be sparse, he is generous;
or if time is harsh, he is gentle.
Though time be harsh, he is kind.
