أَلاَ أبلِغ بَني العَجلاَنِ عَنّي

أَلاَ أبلِغ بَني العَجلاَنِ عَنّي

فَلاَ يُنبِيكَ بِالحَدَثانِ غَيرِي

فَلاَ يُنبِيكَ بِالحَدَثانِ غَيرِي

Take heed: tell the sons of al-Ajlan on my behalf,

Deliver for me this message to the clan of Ajlan:

For none but I will tell you of fortune's turns:

Let none but me bring news of our affairs.

بَأنَّا قَد قَتَلنَا الخَيرَ قُرطاً

بَأنَّا قَد قَتَلنَا الخَيرَ قُرطاً

وَجُلنَا في سَراةِ بَني نُمَير

وَجُلنَا في سَراةِ بَني نُمَير

That we have indeed slain the noble Qurt,

We killed Kort, their noblest man of worth;

And ranged among the chiefs of Banu Numayr.

We lay in ambush by the tents of Bani Numayr.

وأفلَتَنَا بَنُو شَكَلٍ رِجَالاً

وأفلَتَنَا بَنُو شَكَلٍ رِجَالاً

حُفاةً يَربَؤُونَ عَلَى سُمَيرِ

حُفاةً يَربَؤُونَ عَلَى سُمَيرِ

And Banu Shakal escaped us on foot,

Yet Shakal’s stalwart warriors fled us not,

Barefoot, climbing up Sumayr.

Barefoot they charged at us with sword and spear.
