شكرتُI thanked بوّابَكyour doorkeeper إذwhen ردّنيhe turned me away
وذمّهُand blamed him غيريothers علىfor ردِّهhis rebuff
I thanked your doorkeeper when he turned me away,
I thanked your doorkeeper when he turned me away
While others blamed him for his rebuff.
While others blamed him for turning me away
لأنّهُbecause he قلّدنيbestowed on me منّةًa favor
تستوجبcalls for الإغراقlavishness فيin حمدِهِpraising him
For he bestowed on me a favor
Because he made me a favor
That calls for lavish praise of him.
That deserves boundless praise
أعاذنيhe protected me منfrom قُبحthe ugliness ملْقاكَyour reception ليof me
وكبرِكand your arrogance الزّائدexcessive فيin حدِّهِits extent
He shielded me from the ugliness of your reception of me,
He protected me from the ugliness of meeting you
And from your arrogance, exceeding its bounds.
And your excessive haughtiness and arrogance
فعُذْتُso I found refuge أنto أُضبرِعَhumble (apparently intended; spelling unclear) خدّيmy cheek لمنbefore one who
ماءُthe water الحَياmodesty قدalready غاضebbed منfrom خدِّهِhis cheek
So I found refuge from humbling my cheek before one
So I avoided having to rub my cheek on the ground
From whose cheek the water of modesty has ebbed.
For one from whose cheek the water of life has receded
