Your hands gave so freely that rain was put to shame.

And your face was so fair that the moon was made to seem ugly.

The minds of all creatures are left bewildered by you,

so none can tell whether you are a crescent moon or a human.

Had you lived in the age of men whose fame spread

in the pre-Islamic age, no biographies of them would have been written.

And had you lived in the time of revelation, none would have descended

but verses and surahs proclaiming your preeminence.

The ages, and their people who have passed away,

have gone unmentioned since your fame reached the ears.

You have excelled in everything you do,

so neither nomads nor townspeople have been compared with you.

You put them to shame, and your excellence exposed their shortcomings,

until even the graves scorned their occupants.

Let people no longer extol Jawwab or Zufar,

for neither Jawwab nor Zufar comes close to you.

    يا صاحِ هَل يَتَساوى الخُبرُ وَالخَبَرُ

    A report is not like a tale handed down from long ago;

my friend, are firsthand knowledge and a report alike?

Time has passed, and among its tales are peoples

who sought your goal in this world but could not attain it.

The station you have now attained

is below the station you now await.

Whenever you ascend through the heights by steps,

still other steps open up above them.

Your good fortune has no final limit,

nor does your lifespan hasten toward an appointed term.

You rise, meeting the stars of the sky as they descend,

for you ascend while Capella descends.

Time was pitch-black, and you came its way,

so your radiant days changed its color.

As for your hands, they have been given mastery

over gold, sparing nothing and leaving nothing.

    يَعفُو الزَمانُ وَلا يَعفُو لَهُ أَثَرُ

    They exhausted your treasures and preserved fair praise;

time fades, but no trace of that praise fades.

May the trees that struck root never grow barren; thriving were

their branches, and from them this fruit thrived.

As for the frontiers, they have been secured by a chosen man,

firm of resolve, with no weakness in his timber,

    لَولا نَداهُ لَقُلنا إِنَّهُ حَجَرُ

    tough in the face of time's blows, steadfast;

were it not for his bounty, we would call him stone.

The thing he loves most in his dominions

is that praise be amassed, not purses of money.

The fragrance of his foot's hollow lends fragrance to the soil,

until dust takes the place of ambergris.

Blessed of countenance, his pledge is never held back

from fulfillment, nor is his favor hard to obtain.

He enriches and slays: either bestowing blessings

or despoiling; he is neither sweetness nor bitter aloe.

His bounty was praised by the pale camels, bleeding

at their footpads, and by night journeys, wayfarers, and travel.

at which, and at its like, the gaze is bewildered:

a collar on the king whose omen is auspicious,

    like a halo with a moon at its center;

and a radiant robe made from the sun's own skin,

on which the eye cannot hold its gaze.

The gold blazed so fiercely that, if you came close to it,

you would see fire flaring, without a scorching blast.

Much of its blazing has been restrained

by a generous man from whose two palms water is seen being wrung.

Here too is a girdle made from the stars of Orion,

    with rubies and pearls inlaid all around it;

and a keen, hard-tempered sword, whose bearer has deputized

for the caliph—this keen, hard-tempered sword.

Everything obeyed him with an obedience decreed,

even divine decree, even death and destiny.

From what 'Ad selected, and what was bequeathed

by Mudar to the illustrious lords among his sons,

as though its baldrics had been laden with

a lightning flash, or a river flowed within its sheath.

And a proud-eyed, sturdy steed, in whose flowing hair is

    a pleasing length, while its pasterns are short;

as though upon its neck and breast

the ornaments were embers without sparks.

It walks bearing a noble man whom no misstep carries

away from sound guidance, nor does peril lure him on.

And a banner, at whose summit remained bound

    above him, might, support, and victory;

like a lovely garden among the gardens of the uplands,

part gleaming white, part fresh and green.

Its edges curl together, and the wind unfolds it,

as flowers unfold from their buds.

It quivers with joy, good fortune enfolding it,

as though it had news of its own good fortune.

Behind one whose reach in noble deeds is longer than its own,

in glory, with neither weariness nor impatience in him.

and companies have camped, with companies following in their wake.

neither coming to drink nor departing diminishes them at all.

like birds, ill omens far removed from their good fortune,

when fear and apprehension take hold of them.

those domed pavilions, draped in brocade and striped cloth.

Sunken-eyed camels sway beneath figured coverlets,

    whose border images almost speak.

Gifts from an imam to whom you have offered

a love from you whose purity holds no murk.

O you whose qualities my words fall short of describing,

I ask your pardon for my shortcomings.

Your lofty qualities surpass my understanding and overtax

my powers, though I suffer neither inarticulacy nor tongue-tied silence.

You are the raincloud, and I have no power over the raincloud

to reckon it as it pours down rain in abundance.

The world is radiant at your appearance, and through you are strengthened the

pillar, the faith, Islam, and the frontier.

    إِنّي إِلى عُمرِكَ المَمدُودِ مُفتَقِرٌ

    May you live for glory a life without end;

I have need of your prolonged life.

And may you ever seek what you desire and attain it,

and pursue all that is withheld, gaining the power to win it.
