Wrongdoing is never advanced without sound judgment being set back.
Injustice hastens not success, but right's delay,
And people encounter the outcome of everything they have embraced.
And people reap what notions they obey.

He who does good finds good, who evil sows

Sees evil spring from all that he bestows.

On us men tyrannized; their tyranny
upon them, and the One, the Self-Sufficient, gave aid.
Rebounded and the One, the Mighty aided me.

They banded, but they failed to gain their wish,

God made vain all the pacts that they had wished.

They expected safety, until their expectation failed,
Deeming themselves secure till hopes betrayed
while the cavalry streamed onward from al-Sa'di's right side.
And Sa'di's cavalry their ranks dismayed.

To Danith's hill they turned in haste to flee

To seek disaster yet again they strove
while death had watchers lying in wait for their souls.
And death for their rash souls again they wove,

On the day of A'zal, our horsemen were not
Nor were our knights like ones who shun the fray
wretched horsemen, when the battle dust hung thick.
When seas oppresseth them and jackals bay.

Then their caravans set out toward al-Sa'di;
They knew not, when the torrent on them burst,
since they reached al-Sa'di, they have known no good fortune.
Reserves behind them quenched their battle-thirst.

You see the tents adrift, as though they were
al-Jawza and the Lion had sent to aid us.
Mere scum those floods had carried here and there.

They did not know, when the torrent assailed them by night,
The spate bore off their baggage, till confused
that the floodwaters behind them were reinforcements for us.
Were wares and weapons that together fused.

The torrent dragged away what their baggage sacks had held,
'We sorrowed not o'er those vast hosts you led;
until the waves and rings of mail looked alike.
You did us wrong, we nursed you, like a son

Qahtan observed no bond of fellowship.

For Syria you set forth when her knights had gone
That host they mustered did us no harm.
And wolves took heart till the lion should return.

Greed lured you toward our realm, but evil greed
as a child shows devotion to a parent.
Is ever found where envy takes the lead.

You headed for Syria when its horsemen were absent;
But for the Imam, his reverent fear of God,
the wolf dances until the lion arrives.
Not one had crossed the bridge of your abode.

Loyalty forbade our blades to smite,
and envy is coupled with evil ambition.
Else had your coursers fled in headlong flight.

Only true lances, well-directed, flew.

Some hounds, who shunned the battle, would lament
not one of your horsemen would have crossed the bridge.
They had not seen how in the mosque we shent

And pierced them, while their souls winged terrified -
your swords unsheathed in their work of harming us.

Your numbers from their tents, whose mats and pegs
but keen-cutting swords and straight spears.
Were all untouched by you, no robe that sags.

from your encounter—alas, if only they had been there,
Though only three - what use, then, your pack?

Few are not few when champions lead their charge,
with Samhari spears, while souls are lost.
Nor many, many with faint hearts at large.

But God chastised men of our stock who strayed
at the two battlefields, while the fire of war blazed.
When glory passed, intriguing hopes purveyed.

Our clan they sold for paltry gain, and so
so not one of their tent ropes or pegs was seized.
Swapped honor for the shame that they brought low.

Warned us 'gainst Syria, if they passed this way,
nor are the many many when closely examined.
And for its loss tried hard our minds to sway.

With us they pacted and fulfilled their pledge.

their enemies from the edge of the watering place they had reached,
Not gaining what you sought when you assaulted.

The Caliph knows yet finds he can't act on it.

you sought to corrupt affairs that cannot be corrupted.
When others before you climbed and fell beneath.

Dizbiri we cast down for his disobedience,
that the Caliph knows, yet receives nothing.
Though sword and prop; dead men, around them vultures.

We have not relied on led horses to draw us
They betrayed the Imam - we were not treacherous,
near to him; rather, we rely on our intentions.
For feeble faith, not ours, had made them reckless.

Would not have shunned another god's command.

Mistrust, though his affection for us overflowed.
خانُواthey betrayed الإِمامَthe Imam وَماand not خُنّاwe betrayed وَأَفسَدَهُمand corrupted them
ضَعفُweakness of اليَقينِconviction وَلَمand did not نَفسُدwe become corrupt كَماas فَسَدواthey became corrupt
They betrayed the Imam; we did not betray him. They were corrupted
They slandered us, that he might praise and thank them,
by weak conviction; we did not become corrupt as they did.
But God be praised! They missed their mark, the schemers!
وَلاand did not عَصَيناwe disobey أَميرَthe Commander of المُؤمِنينَthe Faithful كَماas
عَصىdisobeyed المُظَفَّرُal-Muzaffar وَهوَwhile he was السَيفُthe sword وَالعَضُدُand the supporting arm
Nor did we disobey the Commander of the Faithful as
For we are more useful if cares afflict him,
al-Muzaffar disobeyed, though he was the sword and the supporting arm.
And find what solves the problems troubling him.
لَكِنbut أَطَعناwe obeyed وَناصَحناand counseled loyally وَماand no عَلِقَتclung
لآلِof the house of مِرداسِMirdas إِلّاexcept بِالإِمامِto the Imam يَدُa hand
Rather, we obeyed and counseled loyally; no hand
Wealth, sons and arms respond when he commands,
of the house of Mirdas held fast to anyone but the Imam.
No other lord but he our hearts and hands.
لَوif كانَwere يُعبَدُworshipped غَيرُother than اللَهِGod ماnot اِمتَنَعُواthey would refuse
أَنto يَعبُدُوهُworship him مَعَalongside الرَبِّthe Lord الَّذيwhom عَبَدُواthey worshipped
Were anyone but God to be worshipped, they would not refuse
to worship him alongside the Lord they have worshipped.
أَمّاas for الإِمامُthe Imam فَماnot حالَتchanged مَحَبَّتُهُhis love
وَإِنَّماand only فيin رِجالٍmen حَولَهُaround him حَسَدُenvy
As for the Imam, his love has not changed;
there is only envy among some men around him.
سامُواthey sought to impose لَناon us عِندَهُbefore him أَمراًa measure لِيَحمَدَهُمso he would praise them
فَالحَمدُso praise لِلّهِto God قَدalready لِيمواthey were blamed وَماand not حُمِدُواthey were praised
They sought a measure against us before him, so he would praise them;
but praise be to God: they were blamed, not praised.
وَنَحنُand we أَنفَعُmore useful مِنهُمthan them إِنif أَلَمَّbefalls بِهِupon him
خَطبٌa calamity وَأَوجَدُand better equipped لِلهَمِّfor the concern الَّذيwhich يَجِدُhe feels
We are more useful than they if he is struck by
a calamity, and better equipped for the care he feels.
وَلِلخَليفَةِand the Caliph has مِنّاfrom us حينَwhen يَندُبُناhe summons us
أَموالُناour possessions وَالقَناand the spears وَالمالُand wealth وَالوَلَدُand children
When the Caliph summons us, he has from us
our possessions and spears, our wealth and our children.
لاnot نَرتَضيwe accept غَيرَهُother than him مَولىًa patron نُعَزُّwe are honored بِهِthrough him
وَلاnor يُغَيِّرُناturns us عَنfrom حُبِّهِloving him الأَبَدُeternity
We accept no patron but him, through whom we are honored;
nor will eternity turn us from loving him.
