Whose are these campsite traces, like the script of the Psalms,

effaced by the west wind and the east wind,

    and every unrelenting rain-laden cloud,

with a fringe of rain like the fringe of a cloak?

You see lightning laughing in its sky,

and at last you see it weeping profusely.

It brings down from the mountain peak whatever is in the nests,

and conceals whatever lies in the hollows of the earth.

And from its downpour the larks become

hidden along the sides of the cairns.

Those traces are empty of the oryxes of humankind,

and have received wild oryxes in their stead.

    فَقَد أَصبَحَت وَهيَ مَأوى الجَوا

    And I remember it as the abode of beautiful women;

yet now it has become the abode of heartache.

We asked its hills about those who had departed,

and the answer was the echo's answer.

And we crossed a barren waste on swift she-camels,

while dawn lay hidden beneath the darkness.

There I gave the caravan a cup of drowsiness to drink,

and the wolf sang to them when it howled.

I say to them, while the heads of the riding camels

seem covered with the spittle of young locusts,

and we and they are like the curves of bows,

from the long night journeys that have bent us sideways:

"Rest a little, for before al-Mu'izz

lie trackless wastes where death is feared."

Then, when we camped in one of the hollows,

we complained to the wilderness of our long hunger.

We rose and crept like serpents,

between the hilltops and the hollows.

At daybreak there appeared to us

    a white-bellied wild she-ass beneath a stout-limbed beast,

stooping over her with a compact, rounded head,

bearing two flames like embers of ghada wood,

and in it jut fangs, white on their backs,

sharpened like the tips of knives.

He has mane-tufts like the wing of a male ostrich,

white at their bases and red at their crests.

When he saw us, he saw his own like:

    hollow-bellied from excessive hunger.

He growled until you saw the lowlands

and the hills shaken by his voice.

He came walking toward young men

who terrified foes of his kind and hers.

    فَبَعضٌ وَجاهُ وَبَعضٌ رَمى

    They charged the lion fiercely;

some stabbed him, and some shot.

We returned toward the mounts with two provisions:

the desert's wild ass and the lion of al-Shara.

We kept hastily roasting that quarry,

and in our haste ate whatever was roasted.

When we had eaten our fill, we hosted the wild beasts

on leftover roast meat from their own kind.

We set out, wading with them through the mirage,

long of neck and long of stride,

toward a king who surpassed the rank of kings:

he was the Pleiades, and they were dust.

He built, and they built, the steps of noble deeds,

but what he built towered above what they built.

    When we reached Abu Salih,

we reached the most exalted of the kings of humankind.

A young man who outstripped people in noble deeds,

to a goal no reach has ever attained.

Noble in lineage, chaste beneath his waistcloth,

discerning in ways other than the way of vice.

Glory and noble deeds befit him,

and his titles and honorific names ring true.

    Whatever good people do,

al-Mu'izz was the first to do it.

He wishes—far be it from him—that there be served

to the guest, as hospitality, his own lifeblood.

How often abundance was lacking in a town,

and his bounty took the place of rain.

He bought provisions with money from their suppliers,

and they stayed the night, so he fed them what he had bought.

Ask about him: how much his hand has distributed

of wealth in putting this edifice together.

If you wish to count al-Mu'izz's kindnesses,

count the stars and count the pebbles.

If you count them, you will find his bounty [uncertain reading]

exceeding, in comparison, both this and that.

He first bestowed his favors on me, before the kings,

and merit belongs only to the one who began.

His beneficence made me flourish; and kindness,

when placed with a worthy person, flourishes.

Abu Salih, if I am absent from your lofty presence,

your heart bears witness to my loyalty.

And my life, when I do not see you,

is a life I deem equal to my death.

Your kindness has broadened my livelihood

and made me desire to build villages.

And you, through your bounty, have made me one

who goes away and gathers wealth from them.

    Whatever land I seek,

wealth from you seeks me there.

From your bounty I have a springtime there,

and from your bounty I have a springtime here.

May you be rewarded on behalf of praise and its poets,

and on behalf of your world's people, with the finest reward.

For you yourself have guarded the frontiers,

and driven their enemies away with your sword.

And you have taught the generous

how to give freely and how to be munificent.

Rejoice in your festival, and may it be joyous

    for these people—this happiness.

And live as long as you wish, an ally of joy,

an ally of good fortune, an ally of lasting life.
