We traveled by night, with rocky heights of Sanir ahead of us,
We travelled, with hills of Sannir before us,
and behind us the gray summits of al-Tana'im.
And behind us the dust of the slumbering caravans.
فَلَمّاthen when تَوسَّطناwe reached the midst of اليَفاعَthe highlands وَأَشرَقَتand shone

Then, as we reached the highlands' midst, there shone
When we reached Yafa and dawn broke,
spurs of Lebanon, white-turbaned;
The sides of Lebanon gleamed white with turbans.

and Mimas of Homs appeared to us, and there loomed
Mimas of Homs appeared to us, and turned aside
the hornlike peaks of Hama amid pitch-black lava fields.
The horns of Hama with burning coals.

And they passed Kafr Tab by night, then at dawn were
Kefr Taba passed at night, and in the morning
at Sarmin, like old, cracked waterskins.
Was like the remnants of tatters after defeat.
كَأَنّas though تُرابَdust الجَرزِthe barren land مِمّاfrom what تُثِيرُهُthey stir it up

As though the dust of barren ground that they stirred up
As if the dust of Juraz, which it raises,
were saffron perfume on their throats and legs.
Were a creature shaking its forelocks and fetlocks.

Then, when we reached al-Mudriki, son of Salih,
When we reached Mudrik ibn Salih
we reached the builder of nobility's thrones:
We reached the builder of glorious palaces.

a king, generous with both right hands, safe
To a generous king, of blameless nature,
from blame—yet his wealth is not safe.
Whose possessions are abundant but himself is peace.

He has Bistam's valor and Hajib's pride,
He has the courage of Sittam and pride of Hajib,
and Luqman's wisdom and Hatim's gifts:
And the wisdom of Luqman and gifts of Hatim.

He has varied virtues, his talk of the noble
endures through the ages, outlasting the memory of the noblest.
Remains after them in eternal glory.
