The phantom visited us late at night;
Imagination has afflicted us, weakened,
so welcome to it, a phantom come to visit!
So welcome to it, imagination that pains!

It traveled in secret, hiding itself, and the light
reveals that it was not concealed.
Shows that it did not become concealed.

May God tend to your ghosts, shepherding
to those pledges and those covenants.
Those pacts and those covenants.

It returned by night, complaining to us of hardship,
It has come complaining to us of estrangement,
and we complained to it of wasting illness and pain.
And we complain to it of distress and pain.

From us to the dwellers of peace?

When they settle at a mountain in the Hijaz,
When they alighted with a flag in Hejaz,
we send greetings to that mountain,
We sent greetings to that flag.

When arrows could not find you to quench.

Your breeze is more fragrant than any scent smelled.

And thirsty as the blades of swords -
as though a sea of mirage lay over it—
As if honey drips upon it from hives.

With it we folded the beds of the chaste,
as black snakes coil beneath heaps of stones.
Folding the black tents beneath the stoning.

I say to my companions when they have wrapped up:
the ostrich's daughters by blundering through the darkness—
"Daughters of darkness with the knocking of darkness!"

and the pale camels toward the noblest being one can seek.
By the Prophet the noblest of creations prayed to!

For if they bring us to the gallant al-Mudriki,
For if the young guide has connected us,
they have brought us to one faithful to his pledges.'
He has connected us, the loyal to covenants.

I have seen noble men; but when I saw
I saw the generous and when I saw
Thimal, I saw the prophet of generosity.
A bit, I saw the prophet of generosity.

وَلاyet not يَبلُغُreaches الشُمُthe lofty mountains وَزنَthe weight الأَشَمof the lofty man
وَلا يَبلُغُ الشُمُ وَزنَ الأَشَم
A lofty man who rivals the lofty mountains,
I smell and he competes, smelling the mountains -
yet the lofty mountains cannot match his weight.
But smell cannot compete with supreme smell.

We blame the age, yet undeserving of blame
We blame time, and time does not deserve
is an age that has bestowed him upon us.
To be gifted by us with blame.

A generous man: noble deeds had crumbled,
Noble - the noble deeds have crumbled,
and he never ceased until he rebuilt what had collapsed.
Yet he did not stop until he rebuilt the ruined.

And beneath the pitch-dark dust he shattered
And he crushed beneath the oppressive tyrant
lance-points in the breasts of formidable warriors.
The hearts of the people in the hearts of terror.

A just man has indeed settled in Aleppo,
He has settled in Aleppo, a just one -
who wiped oppression and darkness away from its people.
Erasing injustice from its people and injustice.

And he guarded them against time's reversals,
And he protected them from the turns of fate
so they slept, while their shepherd did not sleep.
So they slept while their shepherd did not sleep.

When they lacked rain, they looked to his bounty,
When rain was absent, they found its substitute.
and his bounty took the place of steady rains.
So its substitute took the place of rainwater.

Abu Salih, you are the beauty of the age,
Abu Salih, you are the beauty of time
and a robe's beauty lies in the beauty of its border.
And the beauty of the cloak with the beauty of the flag.

When a man composes praise of you,
When a man composes praise upon you,
we find you nobler than what he has composed.
We find you nobler than what is composed.

Near you we are safe from time's reversals:
We have been safe with your nearness diverting fate,
we are the doves, and you the sanctuary.
So we are the doves and you are the sanctuary.

It is as though al-Mu'izz were a Kaaba for us,
It is as if al-Muʿizz is a Kaaba for us
and his palm the Corner, the place touched in reverence.
And his peace is the corner and station.

We congratulate him now that Salih has recovered,
We congratulate when the righteous Salih is well,
and that rejoicing belongs to all peoples.
And that congratulation is for all nations.

How astonishing! How can illness be feared
So strange - how can decline be feared upon you
for you, when you are the cure for illness?
When you are the remedy for sickness?

And the face of time had frowned;
The time had frowned and we said,
then we said, 'Salih has recovered,' and it smiled.
"Salih is righteous," so it smiled.

If his recovery gladdened us for generosity's sake,
If we were delighted by its blossoming with dew,
it surely shortened the lives of the high-humped camels,
It has harmed the lifespans of piles of bliss.

for travelers who arrived on a night
For a journey the pillar spends the night contracted in it,
when the tent-pole is clutched all night.

When a miser hears a voice on such a night,
And he comes walking while in himself are concerns:
he feigns deafness, though he is hardly deaf.
Weakening, not strengthening, him.

Noble in origin, noble in nature.
where the visitors spend the night in plenty.

Such is the nature of a people noble of face,
And bestow upon me the best reward of the pen!
noble of lineage, noble of character.
For I used to seek the most generous

And I sought for praise the people of merit.

and seeking people of worth for my praise.

Kings—whenever you count the kings,

you count those kings among their retainers.
