أَلَمَّتshe visited حينَwhen لاfirst fragment of 'reproached me' وَمَنيremaining fragment of 'reproached me' الهُجُودُsleep
وَعادَتُهاand her custom التَجَنُّبُavoidance وَالصُدودُand turning away
She visited when sleep reproached me,
Though her custom is avoidance and turning away.
أَلَمَّتshe visited فيin الدُجىthe darkness فَكَأَنَّso it was as though صُبحاًa dawn
تَبَلَّجَshone forth مِنهُfrom it لِلسارِيfor the night traveler عَمُودُa pillar
She visited in the darkness, as though she were a dawn
Whose pillar of light shone forth for the night traveler.
وَأَرَّجَتِand she perfumed الفَلاthe wilderness بِالطِيبِwith perfume حَتّىuntil
تَضَوَّعَتgrew fragrant التَهائِمَthe lowlands وَالنُجُودُand the uplands
And she scented the wilderness with perfume, until
The lowlands and uplands breathed fragrance.
سَرىjourneyed by night طَيفُthe phantom الكَرىof sleep وَهناًlate at night وَبَينيand between me
وَبَينَand between مَزارِهِits place of visitation أَمَدٌa distance بَعيدُfar
The phantom of sleep journeyed late at night, while between me
And its place of visitation lay a great distance.
لَعَلكَperhaps you زُرتَنيvisited me ياO طَيفُphantom عَمداًdeliberately
لِتَعلَمَto learn كَيفَhow عاشِقُكَyour lover العَميدُthe love-stricken one
Perhaps you visited me deliberately, O phantom,
To learn how your love-stricken lover fares.
وَقائِلَةٍand a woman who said أَجِدَّكَare you in earnest? كُلَّevery يَومٍday
رِكابٌriding-camels أَنتَyou زاجِرُهاurging them onward وَبِيدُand deserts
And a woman asked, "Truly, every day—
Riding-camels you urge onward, and desert wastes?"
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her إِلىtoward مَلِكٍa king جَوادٍgenerous
يُقَصِّرُfalls short عَنهُof him كُلُّevery فَتىًyoung man نَجُودُvaliant
So I told her, "I am bound for a generous king,
Whom every valiant young man falls short of."
فَتىًa young man يَتلوfollows مَكائِدَهُhis stratagems بِعَفوٍwith pardon
كَذاكَso too الغَيثُthe rain أَوَّلُهُits beginning الرُعُودُthunderclaps
A young man who follows his stratagems with pardon;
So it is with rain: it begins with thunder.
وَيَصفَحُand he pardons صَفحَthe pardon of مُقتَدِرٍone with power وَيُغضيand he looks away
عَلىdespite حَنَقٍwrath كَماas تُغضيlook away الأُسُودُthe lions
And he pardons as one with power, and looks away
Despite his wrath, as lions look away.
لَقَدindeed كَثُرَتhave grown numerous لَهُhe has عِنديwith me أَيادٍfavors
كَثيرٌnumerous لِيof me عَلَيهِنَّfor them الحَسُودُthose who envy
His favors to me have indeed grown many;
Many are those who envy me for them.
I shall give thanks for فَضلَهُhis bounty وَأَزيدُand I seek more مِنهُof it
وَحُقَّand is rightly due لِشُكرِهِin thanks to him مِنّيfrom me المَزيدُmore
I shall thank him for his bounty and seek more of it;
And still more thanks from me are his due.
وَأَنظُمُand I compose مُحكَماتِwell-crafted pieces of الشِعرِpoetry فيهِabout him
كَماas نُظِمَتwere strung مِنَfrom الدُرِّpearls العُقودُthe necklaces
And I shall compose well-crafted verses about him,
As necklaces are strung from pearls.
هَناكَmay it gladden you العِيدُthe festival ياO مَنyou who كُلَّevery يَومٍday
لَناfor us مِنfrom وَجهِهِhis face عِيدٌa festival جَديدُnew
May the festival gladden you, O you who, every day,
Bring us a new festival through your face.
فَلاso may never بَرِحَتcease تُؤالِفُكَbefriend you المَعاليhigh honors
وَلاand may never زالَتcease تُحالِفُكَally with you السُعُودُgood fortunes
So may high honors never cease to befriend you,
And may good fortunes never cease to ally themselves with you.
فَلَوfor if نالَattained الخُلودَimmortality فَتىًa young man بِجُودٍthrough generosity
وَمَعرُوفٍand kindness لحَقَّwould surely be due لَكَto you الخُلودُimmortality
For if a young man won immortality through generosity
And kindness, immortality would surely be your due.
فَماfor there is no مِنfrom بَعدِafter هَذاthis الفَضلِexcellence فَضلٌexcellence
وَلاand there is no مِنfrom بَعدِafter هَذاthis الجُودِgenerosity جُودُgenerosity
For beyond this excellence there is no excellence,
And beyond this generosity there is no generosity.
