Live for noble deeds, O you of noble stock.

And stay safe—may you remain safe throughout the most wretched age.

And drink a pleasant, wholesome draught in a gathering,

Where, since you rose to pursue glory, you have not sat down.

    أَزرت نَضارَتُها بِرَوضِ الأَوعَسِ

    A garden of narcissus was made to grow there;

Its freshness put the meadows of al-Aw‘as to shame.

So it was as though rods of peridot were laden

At the tips of their tresses with stars of pitch-dark night.

Indeed, your honor gave off fragrance when the narcissus did, and they could not tell:

Was it the breeze of your honor, or the breeze of the narcissus?

Let them not lie, for you are sweeter in fragrance

Than it, and a sweeter draught to souls.

O you who wear glory’s most splendid garment,

May you never cease trailing the hem of that garment.

You are the precious one; I fashion treasures in your praise.

Indeed, treasures are for the most precious nobleman.

Live as long as you wish: you are most noble, whether riding

In a procession or sitting in a gathering.
