كَمhow often تُكثِرانِyou two multiply العَذلَreproach وَالتَفنِيداand censure

أَفَتَحسَبانِdo you two, then, think المُستَهامَthe love-crazed man رَشيداsensible
How often you two heap on reproach and censure!
Do you two, then, think the love-crazed man sensible?
أَضرَمتُماyou two kindled بِالعَذلِwith reproach بَينَbetween جَوانِحيmy ribs
ناراًa fire أَحَرَّhotter مِنَthan الجَحيمِHell وَقُوداfuel
With reproach you two have kindled within my ribs
a fire whose fuel burns hotter than Hell's.
لَومٌblame وَصَدٌّand rejection يُؤلِمانِboth hurt أَخاa companion of الهَوىlove
أَفَتَجمَعانِwill you two, then, combine مَلامَةًreproach وَصُدُوداand rejection
Blame and rejection both torment a lover;
will you two, then, combine reproach and rejection?

I shall die of grief after my loved ones have gone;
and a lover, if he dies, dies a martyr.

O gazelle of the herd guarded by spears,
give me back my lost heart.
لَوif كُنتِyou were جَرَّبتِyou experienced الهَوىlove وَشُجُونَهُand its sorrows
ماnot كانَwould be قَدُّكِyour figure ناعِماًsoft أُملُوداsupple
Had you experienced love and its sorrows,
your figure would not be soft and supple.
أَشبَهتِyou resembled فيin الجَوِّthe sky الغَزالَةَthe sun بَهجَةًsplendor

In splendor you resembled the sun in the sky,
and your neck mirrored the gazelle's in the desert.
لَولاwere it not for ظِباءُgazelles بَنيthe sons of الشَريدِal-Sharīd لَماwould not have انثَنىturned away

But for the gazelles of Banū al-Sharīd, it would not have turned away—
the sweetness of sleep, a fugitive from the eyelids.

They unsheathed keen swords from their glances,
and made the cores of hearts into sheaths.

وَكَأَنَّناand as though we نَهوىwe love الرُبىthe hills لاnot الغِيداthe graceful maidens
Graceful maidens—after they were gone, we yearned upon the hills,
and it was as though we loved the hills, not the maidens.
