Has the deserted dwelling at al-Liwa stirred you,

So that remembering it has left your heart sorrowful?

As though the remnants of its open grounds

Across the ages were an Atḥamī cloak.

    فَأَنتَ لِبَينِهم كَلِفٌ شَقِيُّ

    You lived happily with its people for a time, then they departed;

So their parting leaves you lovesick and wretched.

May a lingering raincloud water the grounds after them,

With rain of Simak or Mirzam.

The rumbling of thunder in it is a clamor,

Like the clamor of the Persian reed flute.

When its early rain lets down upon it

Its spouts, the following rain succeeds it:

A following rain that makes the gravel plain lush,

And its adorned playground is clothed in blossoms.

As though its piled-up cloud were a bounty granted it

By Mu'izz al-Dawla, the generous king.

A youth whose hands flow with bounty for his petitioner,

As wells yield water to those who come to them.

He built for Qays a glory that none had built

For Qays before him save the Prophet.

Forbearing toward our offenses against him,

And without forbearance, a noble man would not be noble.

    فَذا صَبِرٌ وَذا عَسَلٌ جَنِيُّ

    He has two flavors: favor and affliction;

One is bitter aloe, the other freshly gathered honey.

    فَإِمّا مُحسِنٌ بِكَ أَو مُسِيُّ

    He harms as he delights those who place their hopes in him;

So he either does you good or does you harm.

So too the sword: its two edges cut,

Yet its surface is smooth when you touch it.

And youths were flung toward him

By the fertile land, for the fine reports of him.

As though, grown gaunt, they were arrows,

But the mounts were bows for them.

Mounts with no fat left in them—

And can fat endure in the face of resolve?

Camels watered every fifth day—if they cannot reach water,

Then the mention of al-Mu'izz quenches their thirst.

A youth whose bounty makes my standing broad,

And whose noble generosity leaves my mind at ease.

    Abu al-'Ulwan, O noble-hearted king,

Whom the noble-hearted king raised to the heights.

I single you out for praise as long as I live,

For you are worthy of praise from me.

And my praise adds nothing to your eminence,

For you are exalted apart from my praise.

So take it, its rhymes richly adorned:

The distant land is too narrow for its breadth.

Far-ranging, with no place to hold it,

As the lean-flanked Akhdari wild ass bolts.

The fruit of a mind free from ignorance,

Rebellious words obeyed its peerless gem.

As though, when I recite it, I were Jarir,

And your hater were al-Farazdaq or 'Adi.

May you endure, house of Mirdas, for I

Am free, through you, of need for any creature.

And may you ever remain lamps of high glory,

For your age is a splendid age.
