From you comes kindness; from me, gratitude.
From you comes grace, and from me comes gratitude
Mine is wealth, and your glory has remembrance.
To me belongs riches, and to your glory belongs mention

You enrich me, and I praise with a striver's utmost zeal;
You enrich me, and I eulogize the earnest striving man
I dictate your praise, and Time writes it down.
And hope in you, as time writes down

I do not deny the bounty that has flowed so full;
I do not deny the blessings you have bestowed bountifully
I am among those you have drowned, O sea.
I am but one you have drowned, O sea
نُعماكَyour bounty نُعمىa bounty لَستُI do not أَكفُرُهاdeny it

Your bounty is a bounty I do not disown;
Your blessings are blessings I do not show ingratitude for
indeed, denying a kindness is unbelief.
Surely ingratitude for kindness is itself ingratitude

O my articulation—may you be blessed, though bearing
the repayment for me—and blessed is poetry.
From me reward, and may poetry be blessed

Enrich me further, and give the emir more praise:
Increase me in wealth, and increase the Emir in praise
neither I nor you have an excuse before him.
I have no excuse before him, nor do you

He gave—no broken promise, no mere pledge;
He gave without going back on his word or breaking his promise
and forgave—no rancor, no resentment.
And pardoned, so there is no resentment or rancor

The bending of his arm and the pouring rain, bountiful

And a generosity of spirit innate to the generous man
whose habit is neither stinginess nor treachery.
Neither miserliness nor betrayal can be his traits

Maʿadd has drowned in his munificence,
You are drowned in his noble deeds
as rain-missed land floods when al-Ghafr drenches it.
As if the sea had drowned the shore with its waves

So its blossom is his bounty, and its pouring rain
So his light is his blessings, and the one who praises him
is the emir's generosity; praise of him is its fragrance.
Is the Emir’s nobility and his spreading fame

He has sent me to tell you of a brother you can trust
by whose brow's light travelers journey at night.
Whose light shines on the forehead of travelers by night

As for the impregnable fortresses, they have been made

Impregnable by a tender youth who calls down rain

And a valor neither Aamir attained fully
as far as the brown Yazanite spears can reach;

Capacious is He who contained the two worlds, a capaciousness requiring no rest

Upon the couches sits a noble man; solace has come
It walked with a rolling gait, and the journey folded its ribs
to the barren wilderness through the delegations visiting him.
Until it resembled it and the oryxes wandering in the yellow lands
مالُواthey leaned إِلَيهِtoward him عَلىupon الرِحالِthe saddles كَماas

They leaned his way upon their saddles, as
So it plummeted, straightening its neck in the lands
wine sways the drinker of its cup.
As the wild ass straightens its neck

And bridled camels trotted swiftly with them,
We said to it, as the journey spurred it on
like crescents, bent-necked and narrow-eyed.
And our whips were red from rebuking it:
نَحُلَتgrew thin وَضَمَّand drew together السَيرُtravel أَضلُعَهاtheir ribs

They grew thin; travel drew their ribs together,
“Patience, until you reach Aleppo, where you will be praised,
until they resembled the yellow nose-rings.
And patience itself will be praised”

Then they plunged on through the lands with us,
And it flung us at the feet of a king
at a long-striding trot, as dusky sandgrouse swoop.
Whose gifts make even the rich needy

Delegations are guided to his noble deeds
and our whips were red from urging them:
By a tender youth whose radiance shines above him

Be patient until you reach Aleppo;
The full moon appears and reappears
you shall be praised, and patience praised.
And one doubts which of the two is the moon

One of tranquil hands, their palms and backs green
whose abundant bounty has enriched the poor.
If the pride of kingship touched them

Wonders! Do not his cool hands become clouded

He appears, and the moon appears in its fullness,
As ten clouds gather over his palms?
leaving doubt which of the two is the full moon.
O pride of the kingdom of the Prophet's family, and one

Through whom victory for his sword was completed!
their undersides and backs all green.
You have become a crown for kings, so if

If Fakhr al-Mulk were to touch with it
You fall, you rightly deserve their pride
the rocks of al-Ahass, those rocks would sprout leaves.
So be content with the titles of the Imam, for the Imam

How strange! Does his cloak not grow wet,
Is content, as are you and the young heroes
when ten clouds lie in his two palms?
They are seven flowers you were singled out for
ياO فَخرَpride of مُلكِthe realm of بَنيthe sons of النَبِيِّthe Prophet وَمَنand one who

O pride of the realm of the Prophet's sons, you
And likewise the stars, there are seven flowers
whose sword's victory was made complete by God!
You are al-Muʿizz, and this is Aleppo

You have become a crown for kings; if
So flow copiously, for each of you is a sea
they boast, they rightly boast of you.
Ibn Hani has lied in his statement
فَاسعَدso rejoice بِأَلقابِin the titles of الإِمامِthe imam فَقَدfor indeed

سَعِدَhas rejoiced الإِمامُthe imam وَأَنتَand you وَالغُرُّand the radiant titles
Rejoice in the imam's titles, for
You are al-Khasib, and this is Egypt
the imam, you, and those radiant titles have rejoiced.
But who is al-Khasib and who are his ilk?
هِيَthey سَبعَةٌseven زُهرٌshining خُصِصتَyou were singled out بِهاwith them

They are seven shining titles reserved for you;
For you belong the pride, not for them
likewise the rising stars are seven and shining.
They preceded as the darkness precedes and the dawn comes
أَنتَyou المُعِزُّal-Muʿizz وَهَذِهِand this حَلَبٌAleppo

You are al-Muʿizz, and this is Aleppo;
When you came in its wake
pour forth, both of you: each of you is a sea.
And likewise smoke precedes fire, but

أَنتَyou الخَصِيبُal-Khasib وَهَذِهِand this مِصرُEgypt
Ibn Hani lied when he said:
Smoke passes, and embers flare up
“You are al-Khasib, and this is Egypt.”
You have rendered the mention of those before meaningless—they
وَمَنِand who is الخَصِيبُal-Khasib وَمَنand who are مَعاشِرُهُhis fellows
لَكَfor you أَنتَyou yourself لاnot لِأُولئِكَfor those الفَخرُglory
And who is al-Khasib, and who are his fellows?
Have no mention, nor their time
Glory is yours, not theirs.
Through you, the world and its inhabitants have been ennobled
سَبَقُواthey went before كَماas سَبقَwent before الدُجىdarkness وَأَتىand came

They went before, as darkness goes before; then came,
And so the fast, the feast, and the breaking of the fast
when you came, dawn upon its heels.
May you be divinely protected forever!

So too, smoke is the beginning of fire:
For as long as you wish, may your life be extended!
the smoke passes, and the embers blaze.
You wake and sleep in splendor
عَطلتَyou effaced ذِكرَthe memory of الأَوَّلِينَthose before فَماso no

You have effaced the memory of those before; no
And upon you, from the Lord of the Exalted Ones, is protection
remembrance remains of them or their age.
Talk of you circulates in the lands, so there is no need
شَرُفَتwas ennobled بِكَthrough you الدَنياthe world وَساكِنُهاand its inhabitants

Through you the world and its inhabitants are ennobled,
For perfume or fragrance
and fasting, feast observance, and breaking the fast.
My praise is strands of jewels composed together

And your sublime status has inexhaustible vigor
as long as you wish, your lifetime prolonged;
No man will be tempted to sin

By my words and swear they are sorcery
with a veil from the Lord of the heights over you.

The tale of you travels through the lands, so
Though this is verse, and that is prose
neither perfume nor fragrance is needed.
I wear robes darkened with ink
مَدحِيmy praise عُقودُnecklaces of جَواهِرٍjewels نُظِمَتstrung
وَعُلاكَand your glory لاmay not عَطِلَتbe unadorned لَهاfor them نَحرُa neck
My praise is necklaces of strung jewels,
Their price the paper and the ink
and your glory is their neck—may it never go bare!
From one from whom I have favors
لاlet not يَأثَمَنَّincur sin فَتىًa young man تُحَيِّرُهُbewilder him
كَلِميmy words فَيَحلِفُso he swears أَنَّهاthat they are سِحرُmagic
Let no youth incur sin if, bewildered
Innumerable, and abundant talents
by my words, he swears they are magic.
I have resolved never to keep for myself
هُوَit بَعضُpart of ماwhat جادَgenerously gave الأَميرُthe emir بِهِit
لَكِنَّbut ذاthis نَظمٌverse وَذاand that نَثرُprose
It is part of what the emir has generously given,
A store, for the openhandedness of your hands is my store
but this is verse, and that is prose.
And praise does not remain for anyone—
أَناI لابِسٌwearing حُلَلاًrobes مُحَبَّرَةًrichly ornamented

I wear richly ornamented robes
No splinter or leaf remains for him
whose price is paper and ink,

from one whose favors toward me
are beyond counting, whose benefactions are many.

I have sworn never to keep for myself
a reserve: your hands' generosity is my reserve.

And praise does not abide with anyone
who still keeps property or abundant wealth.
