Strong indeed is a hand that has you as its supporting arm,

And high rises a building with you as its builder.

And as long as you live for me, time will not forsake me,

Nor will my life be shortened, nor my wealth exhausted.

I see the people of this world, so many in number,

Yet one man before my eyes counts for more than them all.

O Abu Salih, people can seek no noble man

Like you, for not one among them is your equal.

You were created generous; no petitioner has been disappointed by you,

Nor has any seeker met with refusal from you.

And in generosity you have put Ka'b and Hatim to shame,

Just as extra fingers on the palms are deemed unsightly.

Whenever we gain wealth from you, you also give us

Knowledge whose heights are encompassed by benefits.

Indeed, the palaces are adorned with you, a noble man,

Whose noble sons seek refuge at his sides.

    فَدُمتَ وَدامَت في ذَراكَ الفَراقِدُ

    You are like a full moon, and your sons are Farqad stars;

So may you endure, and may the Farqad stars endure in your shelter.

Sons of the best man descended from the best of fathers—

God be praised for such a son, and God be praised for such a father!

    فَخَدّي لِتُربٍ تَحتَ نَعلَيكَ حاسِدُ

    We honor the earth on which you walk;

For my cheek envies the dust beneath your sandals.

Whenever I compose verse about you, the poems, out of love, almost

Hasten to you without a reciter.

I have filled the horizons with them, in praise of a noble man

Whom my age, like me, praises for his bounty.

He wards harm off his servant while the servant is unaware,

And keeps vigil for his welfare while he lies asleep.

And drives fate's reversals away from him with a shoulder

Strong when hardships gather round him.

May a servant be ransom for Abu al-'Ulwan; his heart

Bears witness, for him and against him, to his love.

    فَلا هُوَ مَنّانٌ وَلا أَنا جاحِدُ

    I thanked him for the favor he did not proclaim;

For he does not flaunt his favors, nor am I ungrateful.

You raised the pillar of glory while glory was declining,

And made poetry's market flourish while poetry lay unsold.

And with your face you gave the world a luster,

As though you were a necklace and she a maiden with budding breasts.
